Comments & Feed

This morning I awoke from sleep after only 5 hours with one thing on my mind – how can I modify my comments to look like I want them to and not the weird, screwed up way they currently look?

You think I’m kidding?

It’s 6:30 AM – do you want to be the first to see the way my comments are now styled? Yes, bright and early this morning not only did I crawl out of bed early but I sure did come downstairs, start the coffee and began work on changing the look of my comments.

I realize this sounds a little OCD. But I have a constant obsession to see what it is I can tweak and change all of the time on every site that I own. It’s becoming a sickness, really.

Whatever. I only think I know CSS as well as I don’t to make the changes that I did. (Yes, it was supposed to sound that way).

In other news, I think I finally understand the theory behind using feed readers. That sounds dumb but here’s the story.

Several months ago – OK, maybe a year ago – I downloaded, installed, and used for a minute FeedReader. It’s an easy enough program but I just wasn’t reading enough blogs at the time to really care how quickly I had a chance to view and comment on blog posts.

Really, I maybe read 2 blogs.

These days, I find myself unable to keep up with the amount of blogs I’m reading. And as my visitors seem to continue to increase so do the amount of blogs I find myself starting to read.

Oy!

So, I thought I’d go back to the idea of reading feeds again. I busted open my FeedReader, changed the feeds I was receiving and wa-la – I was updated on the whole world in 5 minutes. Most of the places I read even got comments (and those that didn’t, will).

What’s the crazy part, Katy?

Thanks for asking. OK, here it is. When I was adding my feeds to FeedReader, I noticed that a lot of the personal blogs that I read, the author had removed the links to feeds. Um, ladies, do you not know what those links are for?

Luckily, thanks to the streamlined “everything is the same” with WordPress, I know your feed URL anyhow but what’s the deal with removing links to your feeds?

At any rate, the thing saves me a lot of time. And I like that when the more tag is used, the page loads right there in FeedReader, I’m seen as recent visitor to “MyBlogLog” and I can comment without visiting the actual sites – just chill in FeedReader.

Sarah – hook yourself up with FeedReader if you haven’t already. Seriously, your blogroll is crazy. ROFL

What’s that noise you say?

Yes, that’s the sound of the chain to the computer falling off. Don’t worry it was bound to happen sometime.

I’ve been using Thunderbird to retrieve my RSS feeds and download my email at the same time. Only in the past 2-3 months did I really figure out that Thunderbird was also an RSS Reader though, LOL But I’m quite happy I did! - But, it doesn’t allow me to leave comments within the program itself as I understand FeedReader does? If that’s a fact, I’m going to be downloading that for sure!

Ok, so now I’m asking, what do you mean by “removing the links to feeds”? Your talking the RSS link, right? I’m asking because recently, I’ve gotten into a habit of un-checking the Allow Pings option whenever I write a new post on any blog of mine without really knowing what Pings are for… Do they help RSS Readers download the newest updates?

RSS Readers in my mind really save a lot of time, and they beat going into your bookmarks or visit your own blog for your blogroll links. LOL (yeah, I’ve done that a few times, sshhh)

I’m not a fan of Thunderbird so I don’t know it’s capabilities well but reading feed is pretty awesome.

You can leave comments with FeedReader because it’ll open the actual page the post is on inside of the program and allow you to comment. At that same time, it’ll recognize you on MyBlogLog as being a visitors to the site (a bonus for me or anyone that uses MyBlogLog).

Look to the right –> See the 2 links under ‘Meta’ for RSS2 Posts and Comments? Those are the links I’m talking about.

I wouldn’t un-check the option to allow pings. It enables other people to blog about your blog post and sent a trackback to your site that they’ve mentioned you. Very useful to get your name out there.

My rule of thumb is, if you don’t know what it does, investigate before you go un-checking or messin’ with things. *Nudges Bobbie* I tell her this all the time . . . Allow pings, allow trackbacks, send pings, and allow comments!!!

I am a heavy RSS user. One of my email address is on Yahoo, so I loaded all the feeds I like to read into their reader. Now I can quickly check my email and read my feeds multiple times a day.

For my blog I find that most people will subscribe to the RSS feed, but few to the email version.

Nice BLOG, have a great day!

    It looks very nice.
Maybe I make changes too when I have more time to do so.

Your comments look fine to me…

Also, have you tried Google Reader yet? It’s the best rss reader I’ve ever used.

    Peace

Hee hee, I have most of them on a feed reader (through FF), but it randomly says that they’ve updated when they haven’t, XD. Or takes forever to actually update when they do ;)
