Finding A Blog Theme

No, not a WordPress theme either.

Manda recently wrote a post about putting a theme to her blog. After writing nearly an entire book for a comment I had further thoughts to create my own post about it.

I’ve talked before in this post about finding my blogging niche. And I think it this occurs with a lot of people who set out to have a blog, write for quite some time, and then wonder where it’s all going.

I ask you, why does every blog have to have a purpose?

On any given day that you arrive at my blog you may find a wide variety of posts. And as previously mentioned that’s because this blog is about me. It’s my thoughts. As the tagline always says “My Life. My Way.” This is a blog as I see it, feel it, learn it, love it, hate it, and blog it.

It’s not about anything but what a particular blog post is about. That’s also why I currently run on 21 different post categories. I’m all over the map and for this blog I see it fitting.

But here’s my point.

When you already have an established blog, with readers, content, income, and traffic why do you want to change directions? What about your blogging style do you feel is not working when everything clearly is.

Because Manda is my friend, I’m going to pick on her a little bit as doing so gives this post true meaning.

As much as Manda is my friend, the fact that she’s decided to spend more time blogging about self-help doesn’t really entice me to keep coming back and reading. Those would have to be some really interesting and creative posts to keep my attention long.

Why?

Because Manda’s blog has always been what’s been going on with Manda, her family, her work, her schooling, her life. I read her blog because I get to catch up with my friend when I’m running 1,000 miles and not stopping to write an e-mail that says Hi.

What I suggested, and would suggest to anyone who asked is that if you want to have a blog that carries one specific theme, create that blog. Don’t create that blog on a blog where a subject is already clearly established and working. Even if that subject is just YOU.

When I wanted to share my life as a Mom and Wife, I went out and built Raise It, Clean It, Blog It. And when I have something to say that specifically relates to my life raising Zadey, being Joanne’s wife, and loving every minute of both – that post goes on that blog.

Everyone knows how in love I am with Las Vegas. When I wanted to give visitors, tourists and potential new residents to Las Vegas ideas of what to do, how to have a better vacation here, and talk about my nights out the town, I created a blog for it. And now, when the mood and life of Las Vegas hits me, you’ll find those posts at Katy In Las Vegas.

Those two blogs were created because I wanted blogs with purpose. Because I didn’t believe that every reader that came to I’m Blogging That would be interested in what I would have to say on Raise It, Clean It, Blog It and Katy In Las Vegas.

Likewise, those who visit those blogs may not be interested in the senseless and sense-full non-sense that appears on this blog. They may not care how I feel one day, what new trick I learned in WordPress, what my latest design idea is, who I’m pissed off at now is . . . you get the idea.

Taking this further, I’m Blogging That has the following:

• Established Readership
• Established Page Ranking
• Established Traffic
• Established Income

After 1 ½ years of blogging, removing any portion of this blog that has brought me the above I could lose.

Going further, by creating 2 blogs on different topics I’ve increased:

• Possible Readership
• Topic Base
• Traffic
• Ranking
• Income

If you read I’m Blogging That and are interested in Las Vegas, would you care to read Katy In Las Vegas? If you do, I’ve increased my traffic at both places because I have managed, in whatever capacity to capture your attention enough to keep you coming to both sites and with luck, link to both sites.

When ideas come to me, I can properly file the idea based on what it is by posting the entry on the relevant blog. Thus, linking me in more places when I’m promoting my blog.

Traffic will increase when readers of one blog jump to another, and another, and so on. We all rely on the linking and I’ve increased my exposure because I’ve put myself on the market with not just one blog but three.

Ranking… how many of you are linking to me? How many times I can link to myself when making a specific point? How many more opportunities do I have to get linked because I have a wide range of topics?

Income. So important. Most of you, that I read, would love to make some sort of dollar off your work.

You’re signed up with PayPerPost, PayU2Blog, Sponsored Reviews, you get the idea – with one blog.

Me?

I’m signed up with 3 blogs.

Which means at the end of the month when you’ve collected just one payment for one blog, I’ve collected three and had just as much fun in the process.

If you strongly believe that one blog is for you and you’ve got to switch topics, more power to you. But I would suggest that the change come gradually, you leave something of you that previous readers were used to seeing, and you learn to drive traffic to your blog in a new way so that those who aren’t interested in your topic and stop reading are replaced by people who are interested.

Interesting post there Katy. I cover a variety of subjects on my blog and I think my readership has gotten use to it, but this is great advice for anyone who has a specific niche and is considering switching.

Ahhh I hate being in the spotlight. LoL. I DO get what you’re saying and I have considered having a blog just geared towards physc/self help because that’s what I love. And now, because of you I just may. I do love Coffee N Wisdom being just about me and my life. It’s always been that way. *IF* I were to add in self help into CNW I wouldn’t leave out my life. But I really like your point and it makes sense. *Sniggers* Well, I’m totally satisfied in knowing I sparked a post from you. Bawha. *Muah*

    Rose: Thank you.

Manda: I knew you could handle the spotlight and not be annoyed that I used you for a blog post. LOL I hope you do go with a new blog for the idea. You’d be a great person to write about the subject and would probably be able to draw from a lot of experience with yourself and the people you know. I just hope it’s not where I go to find the real you. *Ü*
